Resource Name: Rubistar

URL: http://rubistar.4teachers.org

Uses: Construct Meaning

Teacher Time Investment: IIIIIIII IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII

   Student Learning Curve: III IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII

Description: Create custom rubrics for any assignment, or download and then tweak existing rubrics. You choose the categories for scoring, and the site offers suggested wording.

You'll also find an Inspiration page which provides lesson plan ideas that incorporate rubric scoring. These content specific ideas can be easily adapted.

The site has developed several how-to videos which greatly reduce the learning curve (see below).

Sample Applications for the Classroom:

  • Create rubrics focusing on only the most important attributes of an assignment.
  • Encourage students to create their own rubrics for self-reflection.
  • Require students to peer evaluate online writing using rubrics designed specifically for those assignments.

Notes and Caveats:

  • While I used this site when I first started out with rubrics, I have since moved on to ForAllRubrics. Definitely check out that site.
  • Also, check out this article about writing rubrics well
  • It's tempting to include too many categories since they're so easy to add. Depending upon the assignment, focus on fewer rather than more aspects of writing in order to focus student efforts.
  • For younger students, using these rubrics is a good way to slowly introduce standardized (state or CCSS) rubrics.
