Description: If you're not 1:1 in your classroom with computers or mobile devices, then you should definitely check out Plickers for quick quizzes and polls. After signing up, you create a class, assigning a number to each student. The Plickers site provides you with a unique digital image for each student that you print on a standard paper. The image scans as a different answer letter (A, B, C, or D) depending on which way it's held. Thus each card can represent four different responses. A smartphone or other mobile device equipped with a reader (and the site's app) is used to scan the classroom in one smooth motion, picking out each card and recording each student's response. The responses are collected and turned into data visualizations which can be shared with the class.
The first short video below shows a quick look at the scanning process; the second video gives more detail about this assessment tool.
Sample Applications for the Classroom:
- Create quick anticipatory sets or surveys of existing attitudes before instruction takes place.
- Use for formative assessment to check understanding mid-lesson; the anonymity of results makes this a great use.
- Use for exit slips.
Notes and Caveats:
- While quick, the scanning across the room step does take some time, which should dissuade you from using Plickers for an extended length series of questions. If permissible, 1:1 use of devices using other Survey and Poll and Quiz Quickly tools is recommended.
